Defining Sports Development

Defining Sports Development

Definition - Sports development is a process that allows community groups, sports groups and various other people to give back and help the community and this is done through the use of sports. This process allows groups to bring sport to young people whether it be bringing them closer to their dreams of sporting success or helping bring troubled youths away from being bad and causing trouble and bringing them closer to their community by providing them with sports to enable them to do this.
Sports development is a great initiative as can reduce crime rates and build stronger bonds in the community.

The main aims of sports development is to change the lives of young people through the power of sports, to provide opportunities for participation in sport and physical activity for all sections of the community. Sports development officers and clubs aim to provide communities with chances such as fitness clubs, health related projects, coaching, development for local clubs and extra training for anyone who would like to part in any sort of sporting activity whether, it be recreational or club level sports or younger the younger generation striving to become professional sportsmen and sportswomen.

Other aims include things such as building a stronger bond in the community through the use of sports this could include anything from tackling any problems in and around the community, to reduce any anti-social behaviour or crime this then helps by reducing any fears or worries the community may have. Other aims include letting groups that are often left out of these types of activities, join in for example more troubled youths that usually don't have the chance to participate in these types of sporting events, with sports development they now get the chance to do this. And also disabled children can get the chance to join in with more of these sporting activities thanks to Sports development groups. More skills in young people become developed due to Sports Development groups and this could prepare young people for placements at work and help them settle down more in school.

There are several groups that sports development groups target to help them improve there ways of life this includes :
  1. Young people from the ages of 16 and under
  2. Older more mature adults from the ages of 45 and over
  3. Girls and Women
  4. Lower Socio Economic groups
  5. Black and Ethnic Minorities
  6. People with disabilities

All of these groups are priority groups for different reasons and all of these groups are targeted by and helped by Sports Development groups and different things are done to help these groups for example different spaces are rented out on certain days just for the priority groups and certain activities are aimed at priority  groups.

Sports development groups have different ways of being funded and they all get different amounts of money, the money com es from different sources, the starting point is the Government the government then distributes the money to the National Governing Bodies (NGB's) and then the National Governing Bodies distribute the money to the Sports Development groups, Sports development groups roughly get £513 million to fund their development groups and projects.

Sports Continuum

The main aim of a sports development continuum is to provide links and opportunities for young people to progress with their sporting ability/participation. There are several different level of the sports continuum you can see this through the continuum pyramid that is displayed above I will explain the different levels now.
Foundation Level - This is the lowest level in terms of sporting activity this is just the basic/grass roots level of sport, this can include PE lessons, sports development group sessions and multi sports sessions. This is something that everyone can do is a good platform for people to start at and begin their journey into the sporting world.

Participation Level - This is the next stage in sports development this is where people start to take sports a bit more seriously and take it to a club level or they start to perform at a slightly more intense level to what they are already at.

Performance Level - This is a more intense level of sports this is where sports performers take their sports seriously and start to adapt and concentrate on specific skills and demonstrate they have talent in their sport, this could then lead to chances such as regional trials, sports camps to enhance skills and also more advanced and harder training session to really make the participant try harder in their choice of sport.

Excellence Level - This is the highest level of and the top of the pyramid, this is the stage when players have reached sporting excellence and are at the top of their game this stage can lead to players reaching much higher stages in their sporting career such as players passing from regional to county and then finally county to national level. This level is where the top end athletes are and where a lot of athletes want to be.

For the next part of the stage I will name examples of each stage and give the reasons why.

Foundation Level - An example of foundation level would be fellow classmate Reece Cope the reason I have placed him in this section is because he only does sports, when he is required for example P.E lessons or casual games of football with friends during the week the reason his level isn't any higher is because causal games of football and P.E is only taking part in sports it is not taking it higher, he is not part of any club to advance his skill level so he will stay at Foundation level until he moves to a club in or out of school to advance his skills to the next stage.

Participation Level - The next example is again fellow classmate Jack Littlewood the reason he is of a higher level is because he is a boxer and he does the quite a lot and also attends boxing clubs, this is the description of the participation level but he is not looking to take the skill any higher he just does this for fitness and because he likes the sport the, the reason he doesn't go any higher is because he does intense training but he is not looking to take this on as a career or move into amateur fights he his happy doing what he is doing now this is the reason Jack is at participation level.

Performance Level - The next example I will choose is another classmate Joe Colman the reason for Joe being at this level is because he takes his football very seriously and plays for two teams one team can be classed at academy level so this would then equal regional and county teams. Another reason for Joe being at this level is because he takes his sport very seriously he also goes to various camps to enhance his skill level and he tries very hard in his sporting area rather than not trying to hard or only doing this for leisure, he would like to make a career out of it.

Excellence Level - The final example I have chosen is Anthony Watson of Bath Rugby club the reason I have chosen him for this level is because he is a full time professional rugby player he plays at a full time professional club and also plays at international level (England). He is at the top of his game and at the highest level and in terms of level cannot surpass this but by staying at excellence level can always be improving in skill.

Continuum Examples
PROJECT: PREMIER LEAGUE 4 SPORT - Project premier league 4 sport is a programme used to engage people from the ages of 11 - 19 and get them into some multiple sports such as Badminton, Basketball, Judo, Table Tennis and Volleyball the reason for this is because all the sports can be done at Foundation level and is easy enough for people to join in with. But then the Project involves satellite coaching sessions that allows coaches  to watch athletes at local club level and school and then give them bigger pathways to progress their skills. The programme constantly involves coaches watching athletes in all 5 of these sports these sports will be played at local schools and what is known as hub clubs, the programme will then progress even further and the project involves hosting regular competitions locally, regionally and nationally this allows people of all abilities to play but then with the bigger competitions such as the regional and national ones this allows athletes of a higher skill level (Athletes at performance and Excellence level) to show their skills and keep progressing. This programme is is good example to use in relation to the sports continuum the reason for this is because the programme starts out looking at people at school and club level and those are foundation and participation level but then as the satellite coaching sessions progress athletes can compete in competitions and these competitions can be anything from performance level to excellence. The strengths of this programme is that it heavily relies on the continuum to spot the athletes with potential for example it starts at foundation level picking athletes with potential from their P.E lessons and such then starts to go up the pyramid and pick athletes from clubs, county and national level. Also there is a wide variety of sports that athletes can be chosen from, and there is a large number of coaches watching and monitoring athletes performance. The only weakness of this programme is that other clubs and may argue this is a lot of money to use on scouts and setting up all these operations so that only some clubs and schools may get the chance to take up on this programme where as other areas may be left out and this would reduce the chance of picking up good athletes or promising talent.

UK Sport - World Class Development Programme - This is another project to help athletes reach the top of their game. But the World Class Development Programme has two different stages, it has the Podium level which is the stage where athletes can be called upon because they have realistic chances of getting a medal or doing well at the next Olympic games but this is the highest level someone could achieve it means they are at least 4 or so years away from competing in the Olympic games. the lower levels of the continuum however is the Podium Potential this is where athletes have the potential to be medal winners but they are still in need of training so they have years of training to go through before they can achieve the Podium level. The way this happens is athletes are scouted from school and regional competitions and then taken to national competitions and then can be approached to become Podium potential athletes. And this can then lead to becoming Podium athletes and ready to compete in the Olympic Games one day. The strengths of this programme is that there there is a lot of pathways for athletes to go down to reach sporting excellence and get to the top of their games, as you can see there is two stages this gives athletes a high chance of being spotted and being called upon to take up these offers and become either Podium athletes and podium potential athletes. Another strength is again it follows the continuum well in that athletes are spotted from various regional and county levels which is Participation/Performance levels and when they are spotted they are then already at Performance level being a podium potential athlete and excellence level being a podium athlete. Another strength is that some athletes in the podium potential programme can step up early and become podium athletes or trial for it for example compete early in national games and see how well they do. The only crictism to this programme is that it heavily relies on scouts and lower level athletes don't get the chance to showcase talents and also one bad performance can mean an athlete may miss the chance to step up to a higher level or would have to wait a long period of time before the chance to get scouted comes around again.

London Wasps Academy/Academy Apprenticeship - This is the final project that I have chosen to do this programme is a rugby programme that helps players with the potential to become professionals. This programme works in two stages. The higher end of the scale is the Academy this level enables players to be nominated by their clubs and schools and to go into trial stages. These stages consist of various assessments and trials that allow the Academy coaches select the players with potential to move into the School of Rugby (SOR) then when the players are at this stage through more trials and selections the coaches then select players with the potential to move on from this to the Elite Player Development Group (EPDG). Then the final stage is a small group of the EPDG will be selected to join the regional academy  and go on to hopefully one day join the London Wasps 1st team. The apprenticeship however is another step up this is for players who are seriously looking to this as a career but still need to maintain education this programme again invites players from the ages of 16-18 to join from their clubs, and join the apprenticeship this step is slightly different to the academy this stage is for players who are looking to maximise their potential and reach high levels of senior rugby, but also still let players have the opportunity to gain various career opportunities alongside further rugby development. It is a means of meeting both sporting and academic aspirations. The strengths to this programme are that it follows the continuum quite well in that there is multiple stages to reach the top and it starts at the bottom for example clubs and school and then moves up the continuum until the highest stage is complete. Another strength is that there is lots of stages to showcase athletes talents at for example if there is the SOR then the EPDG's even if you do not get the academy stage where you want to there is still the chance to be apart of other Schools of rugby and other Elite player development groups. The weaknesses however to these programmes is that most of the time players from public schools or not as well known clubs are not usually put through the trials or there nominations are not even really looked at, more weaknesses are that the these process are not local for some people and the distance for these academies are a long way for some people to travel. Also the scouting process is not that great obviously some scouts are placed at top clubs or they watch at regional and county level games but they do not expand there search for talented players.

Comparing Examples

In this section I will be comparing each of the examples that I have chosen for the continuum as you can see all of the programmes have the similarities and differences and these are things I will be talking about. The similaritites that all the examples have is that they are all sports development groups, they all fit the continuum what I mean by this is that they all fall into a catergory in the sports continuum pyramid, for example the first example is foundation and participation level it is a still a proffesional and recognised sports development group but it is on the lower end of the continuum. Also other similarities are that they are all sports development groups that helps kids to adults get involved in sports or push them further in their careers as athletes. Also another similarity is the way in which all the groups either scout or set up their operations for example the London Wasps Academy and the World Class Development Programme both take on promising athletes nature their talent and then help them become full time proffesional athletes. But all three of the groups scouting networks are roughly the same in the way in which they all send various coaches to different areas around in England or the local area to help kids/Adults develop their sporting skill.

Where as the differences are that all of the examples although they are in the sports contiuum they all help in different ways for example PROJECT: PREMIER LEAGUE 4 SPORT is aimed at getting younger children involved in sport and helping them get to grips with different sports and this is only foundation and participation level. Where as UK Sport - World Class Development Programme is aimed at the teenagers/young adults who have progressed and are ready to become potential future athletes this is further developing performance mainly but slightly going into going into excellence level. And finally London Wasps Academy/Academy Apprenticeship, is aimed at the young adults who are already have future careers as proffesional athletes but this academy helps to mature the young adults and help them get better skills, and this is performance level and excellence. Also another difference is that alll of these examples don't cover as many sports as you would think the only group that covers multiple sports is PROJECT: PREMIER LEAGUE 4 SPORT which covers 5 sports where as the other sports developmetn groups only cover athletics and rugby.

Barriers and Target groups

What are target groups? - Target groups are those sections of the community that are generally less active than the population as a whole. These include women and girls, people living in areas where sport is not important or there is not as much opportunity for sport. Older people where there is no sport or exercise available for them, people of black and minority ethnic groups and finally people with disabilities. There are various different reasons as to why these are all target groups in the sports world, for example some areas need to have the money and the people that are willing to put time into areas that are more deprived, other ones include you need people who will take the time to do activities for older people these activities could include yoga and dancing. and then sometimes there are areas that are heavily populated with boys and men and then clubs may not have the time to run women's and girls sports on the side.

Barriers to participation? - Barriers to participation are various different factors that can affect people from not being able to participate in sports there are several different barriers that can stop people from being able to join in with sports these areas can include educational, social and economical barriers. Most areas of the country and where people live will have some sort of barrier stopping a certain target group from being able to participate in sports for example social or cultural barriers could include language or religious barriers this again could stop some of the target groups from being able to join in with sports.

Participation Level for people with disabilities - The reason participation level could be a struggle for children or people with disabilities is because this is a level for club level participants and the reason I have chosen this is because there is not a huge amount of clubs for people with disabilities and also there are barriers such as lack of early experiences in sport due to their disability. But I think the main factor is that a lot of clubs have a lack of understanding and awareness of how to include people with a disability in sports and this is a big factor as there is a large quantity of people with disabilities in a lot of places and there is not enough clubs out there for people with disabilities and this does not just include mental this also includes physical disabilities as their could be promising paralympians out their who have no way to showcase their talents.

There are lots of issues to help resolve this matter for example extra specially trained coaches could be hired to do individual sessions just focusing on children and older people with disabilities, sessions that would be in safe, quiet and small grouped environments the reason for this is because a lot of people with special needs and disabilities need to have the individual attention and then people need to make it known that family inclusion would be essential to help them and motivate them to do sports. Other than that physical disabilities should be accommodated with a normal session there is the obvious like someone could obviously not join in with a normal physical rugby session but then there could be ways around that like an after session or individual attention to help the people with disabilities.

Performance level for areas that do not have as many facilities - The reason I have chosen this is an example because for less fortunate people e.g. areas with lower income without as many sporting areas or clubs it really hard for the children and adults with talent in those areas to showcase their talent and get noticed because for someone to be able to reach county and regional level they usually live in area with a lot of sports or areas that can be linked with other clubs. The problem that arises with the areas of lower income and not as much sports is that there is not enough sports in general for anyone but then the more talented children and adults do not get the chance to shine and this could stop someone from pursuing a career in sports.

A solution to this could be the government look more into the areas that are not as well funded and help them to fund more sporting areas, and get people more involved in sports or let the local clubs know that they should advertise more and anyone is welcome the reason I have chosen this is because you need to accommodate and facilitate everyone because as previously said there is a lot people out there with talent that cannot shine due to maybe the area they live in so with extra funding and extra motivation these people could join in with sports and progress themselves and have more fun.

Excellence level for Black and ethnic minorities - This a key barrier and level on the continuum that clash a lot the reason for this is because there is obviously quite a big black and ethnic community but within the sporting world a lot of things come across as barriers for this target groups things such as religion and just the whole social aspect revolving around the sports community. And all of these things stop the ethnic minorities from being able to join in with sports at a lower level but getting to a higher level is such a great and hard feat for the minority groups the reason for this is because they are often overlooked and not paid attention to or they simply do not join in with sports due to the fact they feel like they cannot join in or there is no opportunity for them to join in. And within these groups could be some very promising athletes but with the barriers that are in place this stops them from being able to join in with sports and this is a very big issue within the sporting world and this is an issue that needs to be resolved.

A solution to this is all the clubs in areas should make it known that wherever a person is from or what they believe in is always accepted and will not be judged. Simple things such as women from other religions make it known that there traditional clothing can be worn and no judgement will passed. Or clubs could even bring a coach of an ethnic minority to help other people settle in and make them feel like they will not be singled out or left out and also the people within the club should help make people feel welcome. And then for them to reach the higher stages of sports they should not just be overlooked if the talent is there along with the rest of the athletes more they should be included and not left out and this would encourage more people to try and reach the top level of their sporting area.
